Gann Online Help: Search by Reference

Search by Reference

If you want to search for a specific reference to a statute, rule, administrative code provision or similar resource, the fastest way to search is the Search by Reference option.

cite

First, choose the Reference Type from the drop-down box. For example, use N.J.S. for New Jersey Statutes or N.J.A.C. for the New Jersey Administrative Code.

Second, enter the reference in the box below the drop-down box. For example, enter 1:1-1 for subsection 1 of section 1 of Title 1.

Finally, click on the Search button to the right. Using the Enter key will return an error ("Your Search String is Empty.").

Or retrieve a prior search by clicking on the Get Last 10 Searches link at the top of the search box.

Search Results

cite

The results of the search will be presented in the left hand frame (or upper frame, if you've changed your frames position). First, you'll see the full reference as it was searched. That is followed by a box setting out all Gann treatises and databases in which the reference appears, indicating the number of "hits" in each database or treatise in the form of links allowing you to navigate to those citations.

Subscribers and non-subscribers alike can always see where every result of a search occurs throughout the entire Gann Library. If your particular search leads you to a treatise to which you're not subscribed, you'll be able to see the exact location of the hit in a familiar Table of Contents format. To then go further and read the section where the hit occurs, you'll have the opportunity to subscribe on the spot for instant access to that treatise.

Where the full text of the reference appears in the Gann Library, then beneath the links box, you will find the citation to the reference in a table of contents format with links that will take you to the text or to the full table of contents for the treatise or database in which the full text appears.

Other Search Methods

If you are searching for a case and you know the case citation, you may choose the Search by Case Cite option. If you are searching for a case but you don't know the case citation, you may choose the Search by Case Name option. If you don't know the case name or citation, choose the Boolean Search option.
