This volume provides the full text of the New Jersey Rules of Evidence as adopted in 1992 and all subsequent amendments. Comments for each rule includes the history and evolution of the rule, descriptions of relevant case law, as well as author commentary. The online edition of the book contains alerts for up-to-the-minute cases and Court Notices that impact the rules or common law, such as Covid-19 protocols.

About The Authors  arrow

Richard J. Biunno

Richard J. Biunno graduated from Princeton University and Columbia Law School. He was an associate at Lum, Biunno and Tompkins in Newark. He served as an assistant prosecutor in Essex County from 1975 through 1978 and of Middlesex County from 1978 through 1995. He was a big Yankees fan. He died in December 1999 after a long illness.

Harvey Weissbard
Harvey Weissbard is a member of the Complex Commercial Litigation Practice Group at Genova Burns LLC in Newark, N.J.

Mr. Weissbard served as a Judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey, Appellate Division for eight years and, prior to that, served as a trial judge in the Criminal Division. Mr. Weissbard has numerous significant published decisions in many different areas of law, including criminal, employment, land use, privacy and torts.

Mr. Weissbard was appointed by the Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court as Chairman of the Supreme Court's Committee on the Rules of Evidence and is still an active member. He was also chosen to serve as Vice Chairman of the Committee on Recordation of Custodial Interrogations, which led to a landmark report adopted by the Supreme Court, requiring recordation of law enforcement questioning of criminal suspects.

Prior to his judicial appointment, he sustained a vigorous trial and appellate practice for thirty-five years. He tried numerous civil and criminal cases and also argued many appeals on both the state and federal levels. He was President of the New Jersey Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, a trustee of the New Jersey State Bar Association and he is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and member of the American Board of Trial Advocates.

Mr. Weissbard is a graduate of Cornell University, where he majored in physics, and Harvard Law School. After law school, he served two years on active duty as an officer in the U.S. Army.

Alan L. Zegas

Alan L. Zegas, Esq. is an appointed member of the New Jersey Supreme Court's Evidence Committee and previously served on the Court's Criminal Practice and Criminal Jury Charge Committees.

Mr. Zegas received his B.S. From The Wharton School at The University of Pennsylvania, his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, and his J.D. from Rutgers Law School--Newark, where he served as Editor-In-Chief of The Rutgers Law Review, and subsequently taught as an adjunct faculty member.

A former President of the Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of NJ, a former NJ State Bar Association Trustee, and a former Chair of the NJ Bar's Criminal Law Section. Mr. Zegas owns a six-attorney law office in Chatham, N.J., where he maintains an active Federal and State criminal and civil litigation practice. Mr. Zegas recently served as co-counsel for former Mayor of Newark, Sharpe James, in his federal criminal trial. Over the years, Mr. Zegas has represented a wide realm of politicians and prominent corporate executives. Mr. Zegas is a frequent lecturer for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education, and he has appeared on 60 Minutes, various national and local news stations, and Court TV. He has also been quoted as a legal expert by newspapers across the country, including the New York Times, Star Ledger, Philadelphia Inquirer, Bergen Record, and the New Jersey Law Journal.

In 2009, Mr. Zegas was given an award by the Institute for Continuing Legal Education for distinguished service to the bar.

When you purchase "Online Access Only", such online access will expire one year from the date of purchase.

Access to that online treatise by other individuals using the login name of the registered user is prohibited, and will result in the loss of the registered user's license for online access.
